Why fraternity is important

Developing leaders today for life after college is an important part of Greek involvement. Fraternity and sorority members participate in a variety of programs that provide leadership development. Service is a meaningful pillar of fraternity and sorority involvement at UConn. It is perhaps the most personally rewarding of the pillars, as members are provided with opportunities to participate in hands-on volunteer work and implement philanthropic events to raise money for charitable causes.

The opportunities ensure that fraternity and sorority members will have an impact on their community and develop lifelong habits of giving back. Joining a fraternity or sorority is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond ordinary friendships. The following are four reasons why I believe Greek organizations have enhanced life on campus for millions of students:. Aside from having strong ties with current students, Greek organizations are also great ways to connect and network with past and future students not only from the chapter of the school you attended but also chapters from other schools.

This unique networking system between past, present and future students helps create opportunities as small as shared housing and as big as future employment opportunities. Sometimes certain campuses have opportunities to join other close-knit groups that have nothing to do with Greek life. Other campuses, however, offer Greek life as one of the only chances to enjoy a more social atmosphere. It depends on the situation and the student, so make a decision that is right for you.

Just remember that Greek life often is nothing like the movies and TV shows present. The hazing and inappropriate parties might be part of some fraternities and sororities, but not all, and you can make a final decision once you see for yourself. Meanwhile, consider the views of other students regarding fraternities and sororities to find out how the experience was for them.
