However, Radzinsky angrily insisted on continuing the drilling and when Chang appealed to Horace, Radzinsky claimed that he would be in charge now.

Sawyer agreed with Chang and proposed a deal to Radzinsky: if he and Juliet could leave the Island with the submarine, he would tell Radzinsky everything he wants to know. As a result, he demanded that Sawyer draws a map of the position of the Hostiles. Sawyer and Juliet were then taken away to the sub. Miles and Lara left the Island without Pierre. Eventually the drill hit the pocket of energy, and the Earth below started rumbling. Objects seemingly all made of metal started to be dragged into the hole. After Jack dropped the bomb , which had failed to detonate on impact, he tried again to stop the drill. However, the pocket of energy dragged the entire drill down into the hole, crushing Chang's left arm in the process.

Miles helped him free his arm pinned under the beams, and Chang fled the site. Chang usually wore professional looking attire for his videos, often including a lab coat. The lab coat featured either a Flame or Swan logo.

In the Pearl video Chang appeared to have use of his left arm; however, in the Swan and Flame films, he did not, probably due to his arm being trapped during The Incident.

In the Barracks video , he did not move his left arm, suggesting it might have been a cosmetic device. In the Orchid Orientation video , he was using both his arms. Since the Barracks and The Flame were already constructed at the time of The Incident, and only The Orchid and The Swan appeared to be under construction, it is possible that videos for these were re-shot at some point afterward.

Chang's next appearance was in the Pearl orientation film bearing a copyright, where he introduced himself as Dr. In addition, Dr. Wickmund does not have a prosthetic hand as he demonstrates full use of both hands in the orientation film.

Unlike The Swan's orientation film, Wickmund appears within the station and demonstrates some of its uses. Presumably Wickmund was on the island at one point in time. The doctor appeared again, this time without introducing himself, with the manual override of The Flame 's computer.

Rather than an orientation film, he was part of a semi-interactive computer program offering a choice of codes for the user to enter into the computer terminal. John Locke attempted to execute the latter two choices, but The Flame's satellite dish was inoperable as was the sonar.

This prompted the doctor to ask if an incursion by the hostiles has occurred and, if so, to enter "77" into the computer terminal. This code was entered into the computer, triggering a time-delayed activation of C4 explosives planted in the station and the destruction of The Flame. Did you also think you were just Marvin Candle appearing once in an orientation film or did you know you would get a more important role later on? I believed that the character "Marvin Candle" was just going to appear once in the orientation video.

There was no indication that it was going to be anything more than that. When you found out that your character would become more than just a narrator of orientation films, what was your reaction? Of course I was very happy when my character broke out of the orientation videos.

It was great to have some interaction with other characters. From an actor's point of view, how do you approach a role such as Pierre Chang? Seeing as you didn't know his real name for three seasons, how did you create a back story for him? From an actor's point of view, it was easier in the first 3 seasons to play the character because he was just an image in the videos. I was basically doing a strait forward educational video.

I knew there was something more mysterious about the character, but as an actor, you can't play that. The lucky thing for me was that the viewers came up with their own ideas about the character. How would you describe Pierre Chang? I think Pierre Chang is at his best when he is in his own element at his labs, doing his work. He is not comfortable in social situations.
